Parents can plan for their child's success in school. It requires organization, consistency, working with the school, use of community resources, and homework help.

While moms and dads send their students back to their classrooms, kids look forward to seeing their friends again and vow to have a perfect year. Adults wonder what they can do to make this year better at school.

Sending children back to school requires a plan on the part of the adults involved. Students must adjust to the loss of bare feet, trips to the pool, other summer activities, and the freedom from homework.

Parents can do several things to create an environment for school success,

Get Organized for School

Structure and organization will sometimes have to come from parents at first. Habits formed during the first few weeks help prepare for more intense work later in the year. Parents can use this time to clarify that school success starts with forming good study habits. Grades will follow, but only after many weeks of a regular routine.

Setting up a quiet study place is conducive to concentration. Keeping the daily study time as near the same as possible will make the habit become automatic. This investment in training should begin to pay off just in time as work gets a bit harder.

Be Consistent with Your Children

Next it's time for consistency. Bedtimes, meals, and family routines contribute toward starting the school year smoothly. A good plan for school success allows for mistakes yet requires effort. Parents can give themselves permission to say no in order to adhere to a reasonable schedule. Assertive parenting can help you through the tough times.

Help Your Child's School

This early period of the year is a great time to develop a good working relationship with the school. Parents are consumers, whether in public or private schools. Parents can be successful consumers without being demanding. The home-school relationship works better when parents are on the spot to help when needed, volunteer for their school's staff, and show respect in communications involving their child.

Utilize Community Resources

It is often vital to combine both public and private resources to meet a child's academic needs. It may be helpful to hire a tutor to make it possible for a child to succeed in school. Some countries have been doing extra education for years – it is a valid idea to try.

Homework Methods Matter

Using multi-sensory approaches improves memory of learned material. Helping a child use eyes, ears, touch, and verbalizing while learning develops skills and increases performance at school.

Keeping a balance between emphasizing strengths and weaknesses makes learning a positive experience. Neither strong nor weak areas should be avoided at the expense of the other. Utilizing strengths to build up weaknesses brings about more efficient learning. Making homework fun is vital to the child's self-image of being a successful learner.

Just reading an assignment doesn't necessarily put it into the memory. Encouraging reading skills like rereading, dramatizing, retelling, and music develops mastery of material. Connecting the assignments with activities the family did over the summer makes it more important in the mind of the child.

Parents can help kids when school starts by getting organized for school success, being consistent with behavior and habits, supporting local schools, using outside help when needed, and supervising homework in an enjoyable and effective way. The role of parents is vital to helping children do well in school this year.
