Curious about the principles and thoughts behind the STEP Program? This article provides an overview of some of the program's larger points.

The STEP (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) Program is based on the idea that all children want to belong. Without that feeling of belonging, children resort to misbehavior that manifests itself in one or more of the following inappropriate behaviors:

1. Attention seeking

2. Power plays

3. Revenge seeking

4. Displays of inadequacy

The STEP program (available in Spanish and for parents of young children, teens and tweeens) helps parents identify, and effectively address, each of these behaviors.

In part two of this article, we'll take a look at each of these behaviors, as well as tips for recognizing and effectively dealing with them.
