Thanksgiving Day is a wonderful time for families, but it can also be stressful for young children. Try these tips to make your Turkey Day tops.

Thanksgiving is a time for family, food and fun. With so much going on, its no wonder that small children often become overwhelmed and a little fussy. Here are a few tips to keep tykes calm and turkey day great.

  1. Make sure children are rested (a tired child is almost certainly a cranky child). Sure, traveling to family or receiving relatives is very exciting, but try to keep the bedtimes consistent.
  2. If traveling, be sure to travel with familiar items that your child finds comforting.
  3. If the big meal will be served later than your child's usual mealtime, give him a little something to hold him until dinner.
  4. Don't worry too much about fancy clothes that may be uncomfortable for them and worrisome for you as you try to keep them clean.
  5. Remove your child to a quiet space for a little time away from the activity. You may want to share a story, song or special game during this time.
  6. Ask for and receive help from others. Release the need to be "supermom" or "superdad." No one can do it all and even the most capable parents need help.
  7. Diffuse tantrums and power struggles before they gather steam. Remember to offer choices where appropriate and offer your child (without forcing to her finish) a variety of dishes.
  8. Hold onto your sense of humor and have a great time.
